Headteacher’s Welcome
Welcome to Howden-le-Wear Primary School
On behalf of our Academy Council and staff, we would like to take this opportunity to offer both you and your child a sincere and warm welcome to our school. We hope that our website provides you with a comprehensive overview of our values, expectations and ways of working.
Howden-le-Wear has had a school in the village since 1856 when the Wesleyan Day School opened to provide education for the village and surrounding area. The site of the original school was on Hargill Road and remained there until 1974, when the school was moved to its current location on School Street.
To this day, our school continues to grow, develop and thrive. In recent years we have benefited from the provision of extra classrooms to support our vision of offering single form entry education for children from Reception to Year 6, which we achieved for the first time in September 2022. We are also delighted to offer education to Nursery aged pupils from 3 years old, offering 15 hour and 30 hour places.
Howden-le-Wear Primary School is a village community school in the truest tradition. We have a school ethos based on collaboration, trust, respect, high achievement, high expectation and a love of learning so that each and every child can build a successful future. We feel this is encapsulated in our motto, ‘Growing Children’s Futures Together’.
Our aims are to meet the needs of individual children so that they are able to make the most of their abilities and to achieve personal excellence, whilst providing spiritual, moral, social and cultural guidance with the aim to prepare them to take on the responsibilities of later life; including those related to fundamental British Values, in an atmosphere of a caring, nurturing setting, where there is equality of opportunity for all children. We believe whole-heartedly in always placing children at the core of our thinking and our ethos explains how: ‘Your child is at the heart of everything we do. Your child is our child.’
In January 2022, we joined with Advance Learning Partnership to become part of this forward-thinking,
child-centred Multi Academy Trust whose values very much align with ours. As an academy school we can now share expertise and ideas with others in the academy in order to further improve the education which we offer to our children. We still maintain our own strong personal ethos and values, as well as our uniqueness to serve our distinct school community.
Thank you very much for your interest in our school and we very much hope you enjoy exploring our website.
Yours Sincerely,
