Residential Visit Strategy

Our residential programme provides opportunities for children to develop skills required in the wider world whilst offering experiences to locations children may not normally have the chance to visit. Our school values are encompassed within each residential visit and we have strategically organised our progressive progression that aims to build children’s resilience to staying away from home overnight, whilst enjoying a wide range of activities and experiences. Our residential overview is highlighted below:

Year 2 – Children in Year 2 are able to participate in a 1 night sleepover in school. This aims to develop confidence and ensures children become comfortable spending one night away from home. There is an option at this residential for a late night collection, however most children opt to stay overnight.

Year 3 – Year 3 children participate in an overnight camping experience on the school field, developing their resilience and independence.

Year 4 – In Year 4, children participate in a 3 day ‘Canvas Classroom’ camping residential. The first day is in school where children are reminded how to pitch a tent and then work in groups to plan their meals for the residential, sticking to the given budget. On the second day, children visit a local supermarket to buy the food they will need before going to the campsite on the North Yorkshire Moors, pitching tents and cooking their tea. Children then camp overnight, building a camp fire together and taking part in activities and games before returning to school on the third day. This trip aims to develop teamwork skills, resilience and respect.

Year 5 – Our Year 5 children go to Robinwood Activity Centre in Alston, Cumbria for a 3 day / 2 night residential focused on Outdoor Adventurous Education. Our school values of respect, resilience, community, curiosity and ambition are all tested, as children work together to overcome challenges and fears.

Year 6 – Our final primary school residential is a 3 day / 2 night cultural residential visit to Edinburgh. Children explore the history and culture of Scotland’s capital city and visit attraction such as The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle, Real Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh’s Old Town and Dynamic Earth. We display our school values of respect, resilience, community, curiosity and ambition and children thoroughly enjoy their final visit of their primary school careers with their friends.

All of our residential visits are fully inclusive and all children have the opportunity to take part. Residential visits are often financially subsidised to support all children to be able to attend.
