Children are born with a natural curiosity and desire to learn, showing an eagerness to explore, discover and figure things out.
To nurture curiosity is key to help children become lifelong learners.
At Howden-le-Wear Primary School we recognise this desire to learn and through Forest School sessions, the children are given the opportunity to discover the wonders of nature through outdoor play and learning in a natural setting.
Forest School allows children to explore, develop and enhance their skills and understand the importance of outdoor play as well as their awareness and knowledge of the natural world around them by taking part in a range of activities as well as independently gaining skills.
The philosophy of Forest School is to encourage and inspire children through positive outdoor experiences. This inspirational process offers children opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem throughout a range of hands on learning experiences.
The children are supported and guided in their learning and independent exploration is encouraged.
Forest School originated in Scandinavia and began in the UK in the mid 90’s. It takes place whatever the weather (and to quote that famous saying: ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!’). The learning that takes part is centered around the child and offers opportunity for holistic growth, exploration and risk taking.
It is proven that Forest School not only develops knowledge but also helps children’s development in social, emotional, spiritual, physical and intellectual aspects.
Participation in Forest School not only enables children to experience a wide range of activities including arts and crafts, storytelling, using a range of tools, learning different knots, cooking over a fire, games to develop teamwork and co-operation skills it also develops their interest in the outdoors and respect for the environment.
By permitting children to choose how they play and interact with the natural environment, Forest School staff can support, develop end extend play and leaning. By giving children opportunities to explore and share ideas naturally, they will attempt to problem solve and cultivate an atmosphere of working in teams. Independent play gives children the chance to gather information, try things out and find new ways of doing things, which helps to build self-confidence and self-esteem.
Skills developed within Forest School will also help to support children in using and applying skills and knowledge learnt in the classroom.
At Howden, our EYFS take part in twice-monthly forest school sessions. Miss Atkinson is our Forest School Leader and she holds weekly sessions for Years 1-6 on a rotation across the school year. Forest School is hugely popular with all of our children!
