“History is who we are and why we are the way we are.”
Intent
Our aim at Howden-le-Wear Primary School is to encourage children to develop an appreciation and understanding of the past, to help them explore Ancient Civilisations and Empires and learn about the lives of significant people of the past. Our History Curriculum has been designed to cover all of the skills, knowledge and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum, which states that a “high-quality” history education will help children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
Implementation
The History curriculum at Howden-le-Wear Primary School is organised into a progression model that outlines the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be taught in a sequentially coherent way. Chronological Understanding; Historical Understanding; Historical Enquiry; Interpretations of History; Organisation and Communication are all mapped out to ensure that children build on secure prior knowledge. History is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Meaningful links with other subjects are made to strengthen connections and understanding for children. The History units taught have been developed to help children appreciate their own identity and the challenges in their time. It will help them understand the process of change over time and significant developments.
Impact
Our History curriculum strives to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. Within history, we strive to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and enquiry based learning opportunities. Emphasis is placed on investigative learning opportunities to help children gain a coherent knowledge of understanding of each unit of work covered throughout the school. Pupil voice shows that children are confident and able to talk about what they have learnt in history using specific vocabulary. It also demonstrates that children enjoy history and are able to recall their learning over time.
