Pupil Premium
Each year the school receives an amount of money called the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG). This grant provides additional funds to school for each child who is currently, or has been at any time in the last 6 years, entitled to Free School Meals (FSM). In addition, funding is also given for pupils who are ‘Looked After’ by the Local Authority or who are children of Her Majesty’s Forces and pupils who have been subject to a residency order or been adopted after being in care.
At Howden le Wear Primary School, our aim is to ensure that any difference in attainment between groups of children diminish and all children achieve well. Whilst our main aim is to raise academic attainment, we also aim to ensure that children have a wide range of opportunities and experiences to develop confidence, self-esteem and have high aspirations. Also children’s mental health and well-being are an increasing priority in school.
Pupil Premium Strategy 2025 – 2026
- Funding: £57,570 allocated for 2025–26 to support 22% of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium.
- Focus Areas: Closing gaps in literacy and numeracy, improving attendance, boosting emotional resilience, and ensuring access to resources and enrichment.
- Spending: £33k on teaching and CPD, £17.7k on targeted academic support, £6.5k on wider strategies for attendance and wellbeing.
- Key Actions: Phonics interventions, TA-led support, mental health provision, and subsidised enrichment opportunities.
- Context: EYFS and Y1 phonics outcomes were strong last year, but KS2 results dipped below national averages, making this year’s plan critical for accelerating progress.
For the academic year 2024-2025, our funding is £68,080.

Early Years Pupil Premium
From April 2015 all early years providers who deliver Government funded early education are able to claim up to £342 Early Years Pupil Premium for three and four year old children whose parents are in receipt of one or more of the following benefits:
- Income Support
- Income based Job-Seekers Allowance
- Universal Credit
- Income related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- the guaranteed part of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
As a school, we will use this information about you and your child, to provide the best education and support by making sure we receive all the government funding, to which we are entitled, to finance valuable support like extra training or, resources to help raise the quality of your child’s early education.
Three and four-year-olds will also be eligible if:
- they have been in local-authority care for 1 day or more in England and Wales
- they have been adopted from care in England and Wales
- they have left care through a special guardianship order or a child arrangement order in England and Wales
Sports Premium
Sports Premium is an amount of money which the Government has agreed to allocate to schools for the purpose of increasing the quality and breadth of PE and Sport provision, and increasing participation in PE and Sport.
Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the “physical education” PE and sport activities they offer their pupils, but they are free to choose the best way of using the money. For example hire specialist “physical education” PE teachers, hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers, provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport, support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs or run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games.
The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.
- The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
- Broader experience of a range of sport and activities offered to all pupils.
- Increased participation in competitive sport.
Sport Premium Strategy 2025-2026
- Total Funding: £17,470 (fully spent, no carry-forward).
Spending Breakdown:
- CPD: £6,050 (internal training, inter-school sessions, online resources, external coaches).
- Internal Activities: £6,305 (extra-curricular clubs, sports competitions, active travel).
- External Activities: £5,115 (inter-school competitions, external coaching).
- Targeted Support: Inclusive opportunities for SEND pupils, girls, and disadvantaged pupils; free and subsidised clubs.
Impact:
- Increased staff confidence and competence in teaching PE.
- Greater pupil engagement in physical activity and competitive sports.
- Broader, more equal access to a range of sports.
Swimming Outcomes: 86% of Year 6 pupils meet national expectations for distance and strokes; 91% can self-rescue.
Sustainability: Improvements supported through ongoing staff development.
Compliance: Spending signed off by Headteacher and Chair of Governors; published on school website.
Future Plans (2025–26): Funding will be used for similar priorities—staff CPD, inclusive opportunities, extra-curricular clubs, competitive sports, and swimming provision.
